Dr. Barry Carbol, an experienced educator with over 30 years in public and private education, and a former executive in the British Columbia Ministry of Education, has joined Etraffic Solutions as an executive consultant and publisher for its Etraffic Press division.

“I am pleased to announce that Dr. Barry Carbol is joining Etraffic Solutions to head our publishing division,” said Wayne Poncia, CEO of Etraffic Solutions. Etraffic Press publishes a range of online learning resources for students including grade 10 and 11 mathematics (Pilot Math), French as a Second Language, and StudyBUZZ, an innovative assessment tool that the BC Government’s LearnNow BC license as a part of its provincial tutoring initiative.

“Dr. Carbol is a respected educator who brings a range of experience related to online learning and assessment to Etraffic Solutions,” continued Poncia. “He has worked and consulted in the private and public sectors in British Columbia, other parts of Canada and internationally. His experience in the online learning industry will help Etraffic Solutions attain its goal of becoming the premier online publisher for K-12 in Canada.”

“Our schools – our teachers and our children – need and deserve quality education,” said Dr. Carbol. “Etraffic resources are current, creative, and engaging – plus they are affordable which meaningfully addresses the financial burden that schools are forced to manage these days. We must find a new way of connecting with our children. In my experience, Etraffic’s approach fully engages students in contemporary learning using technology that is second nature to them. The students absolutely love it. Without question, teachers and text books remain an integral part of the classroom learning experience – but what we are seeing is another important benefit – teachers actually have more time to provide help and support to students that really need it. That to me says it all.”

Dr. Carbol has been a teacher and principal and was a senior executive in the BC Ministry of Education from 1984-1997 responsible for a number of portfolios including examinations and assessment programs, learning resources, distance learning and education technology policy for schools.

After leaving the Ministry, Dr. Carbol held senior management positions with the Open Learning Agency where he was responsible for the operations of the BC Open University, Open College, Open School, and Workplace Training Systems.

In 2000, he left the OLA to become the product publisher Reality Based Learning in Redmond, Washington and to start his own consulting company. More recently he was a founder of Schmidt and Carbol Consulting, an online learning publisher that provided consulting services to BCEd Online, a consortium of 55 BC school boards.

Among his academic credentials, Dr. Carbol holds a Doctorate. in educational psychology (measurement and evaluation) from the University of Alberta, a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta.
