Vancouver Island Technology Park

In sync with the global economic downturn, dark clouds have rumbled over most of this region’s economic drivers, but one industry believes it may just be creeping out from under the shadows.

During an impromptu roundtable session with a group of high-tech executives this week, the impression is the growing industry is doing more than simply weathering the storm raging around it.

Indeed, there’s a sense that despite the troubles faced by forestry, mining and the uncertainty hanging over the tourism industry, high-tech continues its growth curve.

Today members from the Zhongguancun Life Science Park from Bejing, China paid a visit to the Vancouver Island Technology Park in hopes to create partnerships with VITP and its companies within. The group was provided a presentation on VITP and the proposed OTP, as well as a presentation from Paul Ford, VP of Finance, GenoLogics Life Sciences Software. After the presentation, the group went through a tour of the UVIC-Genome BC Proteomics Centre.

The clients at the three Innovation Place locations in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert contributed more than $647
million to the provincial economy in 2008 according to an economic impact study. This is an increase of nine per cent from
2007 and is due to a significant increase in the number of people working at Innovation Place.

The rate of new Saskatchewan jobs created in Innovation Place during 2008 approached 15 per cent outpacing the overall
provincial growth rate of three per cent. Currently, there are 185 technology companies and business organizations
employing 4,300 people at the research parks in Saskatoon and Regina and the Forest Centre building in Prince Albert.

Don Listwin, founder of the Canary Foundation, announced the June dates today while touring the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria, B.C. The derby brings together the BC technology and business community, Canary Foundation of Canada and BC Cancer Foundation to help support early detection research.

“The derby dates have been set,” Don Listwin said today, “Victoria and Vancouver teams will be competing against each other for the second time.” “We hope the technology industry will continue to make the most important investments in your life – the early detection of cancer.”
